Located in Doris C Freedman Plaza, Central Park NYC, this commission by the Public Art Fund is Soto’s latest in an ongoing series of installations based on rejas, wrought iron screens frequently seen outside homes in Puerto Rico. Rejas often feature repeating geometric motifs that can be traced to West Africa’s Yoruba symbol systems, in contrast to the Spanish architecture celebrated in official Puerto Rican tourism.

Edra Soto: Untitled Miami Beach

Edra Soto Untitled (2)

This architectural intervention titled GRAFT was formatted as an immersive facade at Luis De Jesus Los Angeles booth A25 for UNTITLED Miami Beach. This intervention is influenced by vernacular architecture from Puerto Rico that also provides an intimate experience through photographic documentation. Encapsulated in small formats, each photo can be viewed through the “rejas’ (fence) structure. The photographs are a selection of years of documenting my visits to Puerto Rico. My motivation is to expand the narrative of the fence by providing multidimensionality through it’s vernacular language. This gesture also allows me to reflection on the intimate relationship I’ve been consumed by between Puerto Rico and the United States.
