Columnar Disorder at the Art Institute of Chicago

Germane Barnes Columnar Disorder (3)

Germane Barnes’ solo show, “Columnar Disorder”, has just opened at the Art Institute of Chicago. As recently featured in Wallpaper, the exhibition “offers a sculptural, critical reflection on ‘the enduring architectural legacy of the Classical orders – the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian.’” Barnes presents an alternative to existing styles, viewed through the global Black experience, history, and values, by crafting drawings, collages, and physical representations of his subject.

Navillus had the privilege of working closely with Germane to bring “Migration Column III” to life, based on a 3D model provided by the artist. The project involved CNC carving nearly 100 pieces of S4S poplar, which were assembled barrel-like around a plywood box frame, followed by extensive sanding to achieve the final form.

Interestingly, Germane grew up near Dock 6, the same neighborhood where Navillus is based. Reflecting on the significance of his work, Barnes shared, “My research of African diasporic spatial legacies has only emboldened my pride in Black stories and the desperate need for their telling… The opportunity to share this work in the city that shaped me is an incredible feeling.”

Special thanks to Germane Barnes, curator Irene Sunwoo, and the Art Institute of Chicago for trusting Navillus with this challenging and rewarding project. It was a true team effort by all at Navillus. The exhibition is on display through January 2025. Gallery images courtesy of the artist, taken by Nathan Keay.

The Northman Beer & Cider Garden, a popular spot along this iconic stretch, provides a perfect setting for locals and tourists to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Chicago River. Navillus Collaborates on the Renovation of the Art Institute of Chicago

Navillus Collaborates on Renovation of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Architecture and Design 2

This summer, Navillus Woodworks had the honor of working on the renovation of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Architecture and Design Gallery, located in the museum’s Modern Wing. This exciting project brought together an exceptional team, including Norman Kelley (exhibition design), Irene Sunwoo (curator), Bob Magruder (structural engineer), Dock 6 partner -ism furniture (columns fabrication), and the AIC preparators (walls and more). Navillus’ scope focused on the fabrication and installation of platforms, pedestals, cases, and benches.

Norman Kelley’s design transformed the gallery into an adaptable, modular space. The system of columns and interconnected walls was devised to support future exhibitions, offering flexibility while maintaining precision and elegance. From the perfectly aligned custom-threaded inserts to the white oak veneer caps that match the grain of the surrounding floors, every detail was executed with care and attention. Our enormous platforms, meticulously designed to bisect at the corners, demonstrate the precision Navillus brings to each project.

Seeing the gallery come to life with beautifully arranged design objects, drawings, paintings, and artifacts displayed on the pieces we built was an incredible experience. This project also provided us with a deep dive into sealed cases and non-reactive materials requirements, a nerdy but essential part of ensuring the artifacts remain preserved and safe.

This renovation was truly a collaborative effort, and we’re grateful to Norman Kelley for trusting us with this critical project. A seamless partnership with Kendall, Thomas, Bob, Sam, and the rest of the AIC team made meeting the deadline possible. A special shoutout to the Navillus team, including Wyatt, Remy, Mark, Regan, Clayton, Caroline, Cliff, Robbie, Sabina, Teagan, and Ty, for their dedication and hard work.

If you visit the Art Institute’s Modern Wing, we encourage you to stop by the Architecture and Design Gallery. It’s a space that embodies precision, adaptability, and the artistry of design, and we’re proud to have been part of its transformation.

Navillus Collaborates with Torkwase Dyson at GRAY Chicago

Torkwase Dyson 3

Navillus Woodworks is thrilled to have contributed to Torkwase Dyson’s stunning exhibition, “Of Line and Memory,” now on display at GRAY Chicago. Spanning three galleries, the show features a diverse range of works in scale and medium, and Navillus played a key role in fabricating the two large entrance sculptures titled “Aya.”

These remarkable pieces are perched on a 2,000-pound block of solid steel, resting directly on the gallery floor. Navillus worked in close collaboration with Dock 6 partner -ism furniture and sought expert consultation from Goodfriend Magruder CMD to achieve the intricate balance between cantilever and center slot. The sculptures feature a patinaed steel rim encasing a CNC-cut box frame, which is clad with plywood finished by the artist. True to the concept drawings provided, the sculptures embody both precariousness and reassurance, their minimalist design concealing the complexity of their inner structure.

This project marks Navillus’ fifth collaboration with Torkwase Dyson, working as fabricators, consultants, and project managers. It also represents our first collaboration with GRAY Chicago, making this partnership particularly special. We are incredibly proud of the team effort that brought this project to life. Special thanks to Remy, Regan, Caroline, Mark, Teagan, Ty, Cliff, and the team at -ism: Andrew, Joanna, and Michelle, for their dedication and craftsmanship.

“Of Line and Memory” is on view at GRAY Chicago through January, and we highly encourage everyone to experience this remarkable exhibition. Dyson’s work is a powerful exploration of form, space, and memory, and the entrance sculptures are a striking introduction to the show.
